- Catch & Release:
In the 1950’ and 60’s, Fort Lauderdale gained the reputation as the ‘Sport Fishing Capitol of the World’ and tourists flocked to South Florida to experience the glory days of the sport. Thousands of fish, including sailfish, marlin and tuna , were taken and mounted as trophies. Other fish were also taken and not mounted because many captains earned big commissions only after killing the catch. This trend was unsustainable and led to the concept we all know now as ‘Catch and Release.’ A significant portion of fish caught today is released alive and mounts are produced without the need for the actual fish. In some cases, populations have rebounded dramatically and the fishing has improved accordingly. ‘Catch and Release’ is here to stay. This special exhibit in the museum’s Changing Gallery features archival footage and photos of the mass over-harvesting of fish for sport early on, start-to-finish mounts, taxidermy facts, an exclusive Mark Sosin video and fabulous release photos.
- Showing in Journey's Theater:
Daily at 3:30pm … Part road movie, part fishing trip, "Finding Wild Florida" is a love letter to the Sunshine State. For over 30 days, filmmaker Stephen Mick, photographer Chris Ross and a cast of guides, surfers and conservation experts explored Florida's waters and highways, trying to discover whether any part of Florida is still truly "wild." They followed adventure from the Everglades to the remote Dry Tortugas, finding new definitions of "wild" every step of the way.
