Volunteer Position Descriptions
Camp Counselor
Teach children aquatic conservation through different activities and fishing.
- Help with activities, programs, games, tying knots, equipment, teaching various fishing techniques. Mondays and Tuesdays are here at IGFA, Wednesdays and Thursdays are at various field trip sites, and Fridays are on the Reward Fishing Fleet down in Miami.
- A fishing background is necessary and aquatic biology background is helpful; the ability to teach children, the patience to explain concepts, and knowledge of the aquatic environment in a biological sense is helpful. Patience is big for the days of fishing (lots of untangling lines, bird’s-nests, and constantly tying terminal tackle)
- Camp is M-F, 9 am – 4pm. We ask that if someone is going to volunteer, they volunteer for the week – we do not let people come and volunteer only on field trip days, which are W-F.) Volunteers can help with camp the entire spring camp or summer camp, or for different weeks out of the summer. There is one week of Broward County spring break and 9 weeks over the Broward county summer break.
- The Education Staff will train those interested. Volunteers are not solely in charge of the children, they will be assisting paid camp counselors.
****Interested volunteers must complete a “Jr. Camp Counselor” application
****Act as a volunteer for 2 Education Programs (fishing clinic, birthday party, scout program, etc) prior to camp
****Go through an interview process with the Education Department
